WASHINGTON, DC --(Marketwired - January 25, 2016) - Cooley is pleased to announce that it will be a sponsor of a student engineering team as part of the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod competition, an open competition geared towards university students that have been challenged to design and build the best Hyperloop pod.

The Hyperloop is a high-speed, futuristic form of ground transportation that was detailed in a 2013 white paper by Elon Musk, the founder and CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX. Mr. Musk posted his Hyperloop designs on the Internet in order to accelerate the development of the Hyperloop through open source, public collaboration.

The first phase of the competition is Design Weekend on January 29-30 at the Texas A&M University in College Station, TX. During this first phase of the competition, more than 1,000 students from 120 universities will present their designs for their human-scale Hyperloop pods to panels of SpaceX, Tesla, and university judges. The winning teams will be afforded the opportunity to test their human-scale pods later this summer at the one-mile Hyperloop test track, adjacent to the SpaceX headquarters in Hawthorne, California.

"Supporting this kind of innovation aligns with Cooley's core values," said Cooley partner Andrew Lustig. "We couldn't be more excited to partner with our client SpaceX to support the Hyperloop initiative through this competition."
