OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb 16, 2016) - The Canadian Labour Congress welcomed today's announcement from Ontario Finance Minister Charles Sousa that the province will delay ORPP expansion in order to provide time for a national agreement on CPP expansion.
"It's clear that our country is facing a retirement security crisis, and the best way to solve it is through a universal expansion of the Canada Pension Plan," said CLC President Hassan Yussuff.
Today, nearly two in three working Canadians - that's 11 million workers - have no workplace pension plan.
"We have an urgent situation in front of us, but we have a real opportunity to do what's right for all Canadians," Yussuff said.
"We applaud the leadership shown by the Ontario and federal governments in their partnership announced today. This provides a needed window of opportunity to bring the other provinces on board for CPP expansion," Yussuff added.
The Canadian Labour Congress is the voice of Canada's labour movement, representing 3.3 million Canadian workers.
